About Danburite

Danburite is a  calcium boron silicate mineral with the formula CaB2(SiO4)2. Crystals of Danburite are fairy rare, with the majority of large gem-quality specimens coming from only a handful of locations around the world. Danburite was first discovered in 1839 by Charles Upham Shephard and is named after Danbury, Connecticut. Danburite forms orthorhombic, prismatic crystals that have similar symmetry to Topaz. Specimens often have a V or wedge shape at one or both ends.

Danburite is both subtle and dazzling; well-formed crystals of Danburite gleam and sparkle with soft colors that give it an angelic, ethereal essence. While it can have a gentle appearance, it is a tough mineral. Danburite ranks at about 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, higher than Quartz.

Danburite’s beauty and strength has sparked recent interest in the jewelry industry, but historically Danburite has been a crystal for collectors or those seeking a high vibrational healing stone.

Danburite Value

Typically, Danburite is a stone of interest to mineral collectors and connoisseurs of gems. Danburite is lesser known in the jewelry world but has recently gained popularity as a gemstone. It was discovered during an era when vibrant gemstones were in-style, so the delicate color of this stone was long overlooked in favor of more saturated gems for many decades. However, the exceptional durability and unique aura of Danburite has accelerated its popularity. Still, Danburite is considered a relatively uncommon stone and gems can be quite expensive. Large crystals are also unusual and considered collector’s items. Pricing of course, varies with supply and demand, and by the quality of the Danburite itself. Right now, specimens from Mexico would probably be considered the most desirable, and of course unusual or exceptional gems.

Danburite Rarity

Danburite, as a mineral, is fairly common but nicely formed crystals are quite rare. High-quality specimens of Danburite are limited in the commercial market. Primarily, it is colorless Danburite that is cut and polished into gemstones for jewelry. The pale yellow and pink Danburite crystals are still of interest primarily to collectors.

Danburite Appearance

Danburite Crystal Appearance and IdentificationDanburite is an undeniably beautiful crystal, forming in prismatic crystals that often have an indicative wedge shape at the top. Most commonly, Danburite is pale yellow, nearly colorless or light brown. Very pale pink can be found in certain localities, but the color fades in exposure to sunlight, limiting their availability. Danburite should be transparent and have a vitreous luster - glassy and brilliant. Danburite has an orthorhombic crystal structure and prismatic crystal habit. This meaning the crystal has well-developed crystal faces that are parallel to the vertical axis - like a mirror image. Symmetry is easier to spot in smaller specimens, but larger crystals may be outwardly more complex.

Danburite Localities

Currently, the primary source of gem-grade Danburite is Mexico, specifically at Charcas, San Luis Potosi. Other sources for specimens include Russia, Japan, Burma, Madagascar, and Bolivia. Danburite crystals occur in granites and in metamorphosed carbonate rocks associated with hydrothermal activity.
